Since the beginning of 2024, the largest merger and acquisition case in the ophthalmology industry has been finalized.

Recently, Zeiss Medical announced that it has completed the acquisition of Dutch ophthalmology DORC, with a transaction amount of 985 million euros, approximately 1.06 billion US dollars or 7.7 billion yuan, which has attracted widespread attention in the ophthalmology field.

The acquisition of Dutch ophthalmology DORC by Zeiss was also finalized at the end of 2023 and completed recently.

Eye industry investor Zheng Zhi told Artery Network that the fields of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and medical services are all enthusiastic about mergers and acquisitions, and frequent M&A transactions reflect the characteristics of the ophthalmology industry with economies of scale and constant strength. "The ophthalmology industry is one of the medical innovation fields that can give birth to super giants the most."

As one of the main players in this merger and acquisition case, Dutch ophthalmology DORC is an innovative enterprise focusing on ophthalmic products and solutions. It has a competitive position in the field of mid to high end ophthalmic equipment, and its most famous device is the Eva Nexus super emulsion glass cutting all-in-one machine with dual functions. In addition, the company also has the second largest global market share in the field of vitreoretinal consumables and a leading position in the dye market.

For this transaction, Zeiss Medical stated that the acquisition will strengthen its position as the world's fastest growing manufacturer of ophthalmic medical equipment.

Several industry insiders have told Artery Network that the ophthalmic equipment industry in foreign countries has developed early, and companies such as Alcon, Zeiss, Heidelberg, Canon, and Topcon have become industry leaders with extremely high barriers in the mid to high end field. The development of high-end ophthalmic equipment in China was relatively late. Eight years ago, it was still an investment desert, but now it has started and a group of outstanding domestic enterprise representatives have emerged.
